Through our process of Action, Reflection and Connection, Lent Event offers practical steps along the path of personal growth and connection with our global community.

A critical part of the process is to engage in Reflection opening our hearts and minds to the injustices of our world and our response to injustice:

Reflection through Lent Event :

Alone or in a group, set time aside to explore the Journey Guide. This six-part Lenten discussion series and daily prayer guide helps us journey into the realm of real relationship with people who are living in material poverty.

Next Steps – Reflecting beyond Lent Event:

To reflect further, the team at Lent Event recommends the following steps, as appropriate to your own journey…

First Steps:

The Lent Event experience has sparked something new in me and I want to journey further.

  • Prayerfully reflect on your spending and lifestyle. Consider where to from here?
  • Talk with people from developing countries to broaden your understanding.
  • Investigate what the Bible says about poverty.
  • Engage with your group in a relevant follow up study.
  • Read articles and blogs on poverty.
  • Learn more about good international development.
  • Watch movies dealing with justice issues.

Stepping Up:

My Lenten journey has inspired me to deepen my commitment to seeking justice for people living in poverty.

  • Form a prayer group to pray for people affected by extreme poverty and for just and compassionate responses to poverty.
  • Organise a prayer vigil centred on lifting up one or more of UnitingWorld’s partner churches.
  • Include justice themes in your community’s worship through prayer and song.
  • Commit to a daily reflection or meditation relating to international development.
  • Explore Christian responses to injustice through reading  recommended books.
  • Begin a personal daily journal reflecting on your journey with people in the developing world.

Stepping Out:

I’m ready to risk stepping out of my comfort zone, risk taking a servant-leader role in my community and risk real friendship with people who are poor.

  • Conduct a justice audit on yourself and your church community and implement change to help bring about justice.
  • With a group, read and unpack Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger by Ronald Sider.
  • Write prayers for people living in poverty and share in church, publications, blogs etc.
  • Start a book club with non-church members to reflect on poverty and responses to poverty.
  • Plan and lead special worship services centred on issues of poverty and lifting up partner churches. Invite community and key leaders to attend.
